I am confused. How do you start with a plaid if that isn't in your design?
You simply draw it on. That said, you need to play with some markers or look at some plaid examples to get an idea of what kind of design you want.
I added that as a future lesson inside The Rug Hooking Journey. howtorughook.com/trhj Those lessons happen in Office Hours every week for members only.
Oh huge thank you I just learned so much!
I will try to do this once a month, usually on the second Saturday at 2pm. You can vide the calendar here at any time to see all the upcoming events. Here's the link to the calendar: calendar.google.com/calendar/u/0?cid=ZzRxaHRyYmY4ZmZyOWVsN3Mxbm5uMnZrZG9AZ3JvdXAuY2FsZW5kYXIuZ29vZ2xlLmNvbQ
Top down
When you were showing "all over the place" the design you drew out to show us direction, which direction would your stitches go?
You would hook on the line. Once that is done, you hook another row next to that line. If I find I have too large of a space and I want to shrink it down, I will swerve away from the line and cut the large shape into smaller shapes. I will focus on this style during the February 2025 Beginner Live!
Well slap yer grandma I never thought to pulll it through the monks cloth! Thats my biggest problem that I can't hold it straight as I go down the strip. Tip much appreciated Cindy😎
There are a lot of tips here on UA-cam, more in my Live! Beginner Series playlist, but there are thousands inside The Rug Hooking Journey: howtorughook.com/trhj
At our Guild we have a number two cutter blade! It’s so tiny and difficult to hook with, I guess it’s only for very fine detail.
I only use it AFTER everything is hooked. I love it for adding details to landscapes. It is one of those cuts you cannot cut by hand.
How much wool does wool cover in a space. They are selling fat quarters and other sizes and im not sure how much to get
For most people, you need 4x the area, but is it good to check your own Wool Factor. I have a lesson for that inside the Basics Course which is part of The Rug Hooking Journey: howtorughook.com/trhj
Music sounds good
Thanks for letting me know. I've had problems in the past before when I host a Zoom call and then broadcast it into UA-cam. I finally got all the settings right!
Hi Cindy from Australia
I'm glad you can join the replay!
The music sounds loud and clear.
Thanks for letting me know.
Hello Cindi. Greetings from Lancaster PA.
I love the Lancaster area. I've been there several times.
Hi Cindy, So glad I discovered your UA-cam channel. My Gram made incredible hooked rugs and tried to teach me how to hook rugs, nevertheless I was a preteen at the time and didn’t pay attention. Now in my 80’s I need to repair a hooked rug and decided that I should be able to do it. I searched the You tube channels to learn how. Then I found your site, and explanations the best. I am enjoying hooking a 6x6 sample. All the best to you. TX😊
Hooking a small piece of your own is my first advice, and you are already doing that. Once you feel ready to move on, join The Rug Hooking Journey: howtorughook.com/trhj. Then go to this lesson: howtorughook.com/01-05-21-repair-of-burlap-rug/
Thanks for the informative content. ❤
You are so welcome! There are about 100 videos here on UA-cam. I have thousands in The Rug Hooking Journey membership. Join here: howtorughook.com/trhj
How do you fish a rug for a wall hanging?
You can do any finish for a wall hanging. The backing will still rot at the knife fold edge, with or without foot traffic. The enemy is time. This video will explain that: ua-cam.com/users/liveESxTWqyg2Qk?si=rAG2AJgbysOsL3IW Once it is finished, I use this method to hang it on the wall: ua-cam.com/video/ePmDauQD0uo/v-deo.htmlsi=LwKodtnf4jw96-MU
Where do you get rug warp?
I sell rug warp on my website: cindigayrughooking.com/product/rug-warp-rug-hooking-backing/ Or just google Cindi Gay rug warp
What frame would you recommend to a beginner besides the no longer produced Puritan? Thank you!
There are plenty of Puritan frames available second hand. Try the Facebook Rug Hooking Buy and Sell page. Otherwise, I recommend the Needleworks frame. Many of my students like them, I still prefer the Puritan. cindigayrughooking.com/recommendations/
@@rughookinggreat suggestion, I joined that FB group. I found a Puritan frame on EBay that was not astronomical, not cheap, but I felt a good deal. I like vintage tools if I can get them. I live in SW FL, and there is not much resource for brick and mortar that is not local for any of my needle crafting. I am just getting into this craft as I have only done locker hooked rugs. 😊
This is brilliant

Hi Cindi, thank you for another awesome video! I’m finding that your views align well with my own, and you’re a great resource (I’m a complete beginner). Can you tell me if this fabric is available in Canada? It’s ridiculously expensive to buy things from the States. Before I found this I bought Red Devil’s version of the Fiba Crackstop wall fabric, but I’m concerned by how big the holes are. I’m thinking I may have a bit more work to do given that fine details cannot be transferred with this method.
It would be available if a teacher or shop owner brought it in from the states. I don't have that information. I realize the shipping is expensive. Your backing or foundation cloth is the most important part of your rug. Don't skimp on that.
Is it true that rug weave is best for #5 cut or under? I think my strips might be a bit bigger, should I still use rug weave?
If you meant rug warp, you can hook any size in that. Often the people who are quoting that you can only hook up to a 5 have never tried the other cuts. I use up to a #9. I don't often use 8.5 or 9, my favorite cut size is a #7. That hooks nicely in rug warp.
???
@@pattimclarty2439 what can I help you with? I’m not sure what the ??? Means
Thank you for this very helpful video! I particularly liked the rug you were showing at 10:20 (the geometric one). Is that an available pattern? I've inherited a collection of rug hooking supplies and something like that would be a great way to work through some of the wool. thanks!
It is called Pyramids. You can buy it here: rughook.com/products/pr1280?variant=366925257¤cy=USD&srsltid=AfmBOooUI__XqBNlMnQc6ct7FEMHPP5IWkOSGUWgreYq3-Xne0IlIn1Nqs4
@@rughooking Thank you so much!
I wanted to say to a of the people in the chat do whatever you like because when they use to do wool hooking they used whatever they had and did what ever they felt
I agree, but you first need to learn what makes a good finish, THEN make your choice, Inside the Basics course, I have a section on all types of finishes..
Two things, first, as a former picture framer, it would help to draw those pencil lines in the ditch close to the edge of where the stretcher frame will be. That way, as you pull your fabric taut, you’ll easily be able to tell to keep the weave of your fabric pretty even. Second, if you keep a pair of pliers handy, you can just squeeze and pull the top handles to the bully clips off so they are not in your way as you work. Then just reverse that when you’re ready to remove your piece.
Not many rugs are put on stretchers, but I love your ideas. I would recommend hooki line or just outside so that when the rug is mounted, the pencil lines will not show. Thank you for the tip about the bull clips. That one will be put in place for the beginners.
Is there a way we can see the exemples you were showing but we cannot see in this video?😊 thank you for your great information, I’m thinking of joining at some point.
Right now, I can only show that through Zoom. All members of The Rug Hooking Journey can see that. I could do a blog post for this video, which would be available to the public. Let me add that to my to do list. Join the Journey: howtorughook.com/trhj

Q how long is your whipping 32:13 yarn strip.?
For yarn, I simply cut the hank in one place. That equals about 5 feet. That seems to be the sweet spot, not too long or too short.
Hi from KY
Hello there!
Good lesson
Thanks for watching
Thank you Cindi for a trick at whiping corneres. Leaves a professional look! Your explanations are easy and wonderful, for a happy outcome!

Brilliant, thank you
Glad it was helpful!
I’m sorry. But the burn test is more than smell. Wool burns. If it is not wool it melts.
The problem comes in when it is mostly wool. It is hard to judge and a bit dangerous. Bleach dissolves JUST the wool.
?? How do you avoid twisting the wool under the rug?
It is all about technique. Be sure the hook goes looking for the strip. You are not wrapping the wool around the hook. I have SO Many more tips inside The Rug Hooking Journey: howtorughook.com/trhj

Hello from Kansas
Thanks for watching!
How wide do you cut your stripes ? And do you go in to every hole
Strips are cut from 1/4" (#8) to 3/32" (#3) and you almost NEVER hook in every hole.. This would be a great question to ask at Office Hours if you are a member of The Rug Hooking Journey. To join: howtorughook.com/trhj
I looked back at my first rugs. One stands out as awful. Dies one usually throw away or take all wool out and start over. I tried spot fixing. No good
Let it be. Move on. Start dreaming about your next rug -- even if it is the same pattern.
Thank you.
You're welcome!
What kind of the clothe do you use ?
I prefer 100% wool fabric, as do most rug hookers. If you don't have that available, use what you have. Wool has the unique property that it does not get dirty. The dirt sits on the surface and just brushes off, making it the perfect fiber for rugs. Back in the day, the best carpets you could buy were made of wool.
Where I can get wool cutter.
My favorite cutter, the Beeline, is available through dealers. I recommend Dorr Mill Store. I don't recommend the long blades unless you are cutting thousands of strips for kits. Various cut sizes are often out of stock, so you have to buy them when you see them. If you end up on someone else's website, be sure to call to verify that the blades are in stock. Several dealers sell them even if they do not have the blades to ship out. You eventually get them but it could take months. Better to find a dealer who has the blades now.
Excellent info! Thanks so much, that video showing how you turn is really helpful.
These are the types of videos you would see inside The Rug Hooking Journey: howtorughook.com/trhj
The sky in your piece looked as if it was hooked fairly straight
It is "fairly" straight. The important thing is that you do not hook it solid from the top down or bottom up. Paint it as if you are using a paint brush. That will help the rows to finger into each other.
I no longer post the videos to UA-cam on Tuesday. The Tuesday Office Hours are now every week inside The Rug Hooking Journey. Join the Journey here: howtorughook.com/trhj
